I love the West Village and eating there is always a great experience...my favorites? They are the top three in The Village (and two are up there in the top five in the city). Not expensive, not pretentious, just great food that is (most importantly in NYC), consistently great!
Love L'Artusi
Where? 228 West 10th between Bleecker and Hudson
What? Italian. Try the mushroom, pancetta and fried egg salad (it'll make you... smile), we usually get piggy and have the Pappardelle or Tagliatelle as a mid-course and the steak (wait 'til you bite into the potatos!) and pork are favorites. The desserts are great and we cant wait to try the brunch!!
When? Dinner is 5:30- 11:00, make reservations well in advance
Love Red Farm
Where? 529 Hudson (at Charles)
What? Chinese. The servers are great, so have them take you through the menu and weed out what you won't be trying that evening! You have to have the Crispy Beef, Filet Mignon Tarts, Duck and Fuji Apple Wraps, Vegetable Dumplings, Lamb Dumplings...then go for the Prime Rib (you'll get a rice or noodle dish too). The desserts are very nice as well.
When? Dinner is 5:00- 11:00, no reservations, so get there early...you'll have to wait anyway. We wanted to hate it because it got so much buzz, the seating is family style and no reservations- no such luck, we LOVE it.
Love Tartine
Where? 253 West 11th at 4th
What? Casual French. Gets a bunch of bad reviews (okay, don't expect great service and expect to wait and be cramped during dinner), but it's a sentimental favorite. The brunch is amazing (bacon is smokey and wonderful) and we love sitting outside. For dinner, the Grilled Saucisson to start and the Sauteed Chicken are always great comfort foods.
When? Dinner is 9-11:30 on weekdays, there is almost always a wait
