Thrifty Me: Chelsea & The West Village

I love a bargain (and I buy and sell antiques a bit on the side), so with that said, New York is a surprising treasure trove of both! As I'm out and about in Chelsea and the West Village, I stop at the following thrifts- you have to go often and sometimes it's a hit and sometimes it isn't, but I find that it's more the former than the latter. Go see for yourself, as in real estate, there is no greater thrill than finding that treasure!

Best of Both Worlds: Soho

There is something almost mid century about this Soho one bedroom. I'm not sure if it is the clean lines, the warm wood floors or the asymmetry of the high windows...it's just very soothing in it's geometries. With a bank of closets off the living area and one in the bedroom, there is plenty of storage. The location? Can't be beat...literally steps from the 6 and a block or so from the N R Q and all the shopping and restaurants. But again, it's a quiet place to come home and relax!

Window Shop

I love the blocks between Christopher between Waverly Place and Greenwich Avenue...it's one of those quiet, little city "moments" where you can lose yourself. Love the shoes, the chair and the store...

I wasn't going to post again, but I just came back from The Village, previewing this loft studio...I think it's a steal! On a great corner by Gay Street, it has super-high ceilings, great living space and beautifully updated kitchen and bathroom. Grab it and don't feel guilty!!

The Happy Client: West Village

I rented Kara this one bedroom in the West Village a little while ago. After she had time to settle in, I was dying to see how this beautiful space on Jane Street had turned out...and here it is! Kara says the apartment is amazing and the neighbors? "Super nice! I've gone out and had drinks with two of them already! One lady in the building even said,' If you need some sugar, don't hesitate to knock.'"...love that!

Who? Kara, Group Strategy Director, Advertising (and Bella)
What? West Village Elevator Building on Jane
How? We looked at about 12 apartments, submitted an application on this one and was denied because "the landlord won't negotiate move-in dates." Two weeks later, we submitted again and nabbed it for 300.00 less a month!
Best Thing about the Apartment? Kara's first response was "location!", then "this living room with the massive windows... it's so quiet too!"
Worst Thing about the Search? "Broker's Fee (I expected that!), but I really think I got about 200 more square feet than what I looked at on my own....and seriously, look at this place!"
Worst Thing about the Apartment? " I was used to central air and a washer/dryer in my apartment in Chicago, but that's just being picky. The landlord supplied the air conditioning unit and the building sup couldn't be more wonderful."

Doorman, Elevator & Space: Greenwich Village

I love this building on 5th Avenue in Greenwich Village! Shopping is great, it's a block from Union Square, yet  it's quiet and unpretentious. These apartments are new to the market and in the process of being spruced up, but they rent before they are finished, so you'll have to trust me on this. The first has a wall in the living space to create a two bedroom....I can check if it's going or not. The second apartment, as a point of interest, is the same layout as the unit I featured in Dark Doings in June (about painting your walls dark colors). Take a look:
